About me
I’m Alan
I’m Alan Travers, a UX designer based in Galway, Ireland.
I currently work at Cisco, designing support and self-serve experiences for Webex. My work focuses on helping people move through complex product ecosystems with more clarity, improving structure, navigation, user journeys, and the way information is presented.
My background spans UX design, motion design, graphic design, and filmmaking. That mix has shaped how I think about design: as a way to guide attention, reduce friction, and help people understand what to do next.
Background
Before focusing more deeply on UX, I built a broad creative career across web design, motion graphics, animation, branding, and film.
That experience still informs how I approach UX today. Motion design taught me how to guide attention. Film taught me pacing and storytelling. Graphic design taught me visual hierarchy. UX brought those skills together around solving real user problems.
I’ve worked with organisations including Cisco, Croí, Ronald McDonald House Charities, iDonate, Neff, AO.com, the Port of Galway, and the Irish Cardiac Society.
Education and Training
My academic background combines humanities, technology, systems thinking, and design.
Formal education
Professional Diploma, UX Design | UX Design Institute, Glasgow Caledonian University
Higher Diploma (HDSA), Systems Analysis and Design | University of Galway
Bachelor of Arts (BA), Information Technology and English | University of GalwayAdditional training and certification
Certificate in AI for Prototyping| UX Design Institute
Generative AI Collaboration White Belt| Cisco SystemsThis mix of education and training reflects how I work: combining structure, communication, systems thinking, visual design, and emerging tools to create clearer digital experiences.
Awards and Recognition
My earlier film and motion work has been recognised through a number of festival selections and awards.
Multiple short films screened as official selections at various international film festivals in Ireland, Toronto and Los Angeles.
“Stop Motion Biscuit Cake” received both the Audience Choice award and the Judge’s Award in the 30 Minute Film Festival segment of the 2012 Galway Film Fleadh.
These projects were part of the creative background that eventually shaped how I think about experience design: structure, pacing, attention, and how people connect with a story.
Interview in OTIA magazine
Featured in OTIA magazine, a publication cataloguing creativity and arts in the tech community. The article was a full feature interview with me, speaking about my background, insprirations and how I incorporate creativity into my career in tech.
Outside of work
Outside of design, I’m usually listening to music, watching films, playing guitar, or working on personal creative projects.
I also spend a lot of time with my two golden retrievers, Louie and Beau, who are excellent company and occasional creative supervisors.
